41 of 100: Holy Spirit – No BI-UNE God in the Old Testament: Part 1 [Exploring Genesis to Judges]

Seeking answers to:
  • How did people deal with the subject of the spirit of God in the OT?
  • What did the prophet Elijah think of the Holy spirit?
    • Example:  Double portion of the Holy Spirit that the Prophet Elisha refers to?
    • 2 Kings 2:9When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.”
    • And Elisha said, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.”
Background:
The Hebrew word for spirit is rûach
roo’-akh means
From H7306; wind; by resemblance breath, that is, a sensible (or even violent) exhalation; figuratively life, anger, unsubstantiality; by extension a region of the sky; by resemblance spirit, but only of a rational being (including its expression and functions): – air, anger, blast, breath, X cool, courage, mind, X quarter, X side, spirit ([-ual]), tempest, X vain, ([whirl-]) wind (-y).
A survey of verses from Genesis to Judges
Let us look at the following verses and understand what the spirit of God could mean?
  1. Gen 1:2  And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
  2. And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
  3. (Genesis 6:3 KJV)
  4. Exo 31:3  And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,
  5. Exo 35:31  And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship;
  6. Num 11:25  And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, theyprophesied, and did not cease. Num 11:26  But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp.
  7. Num 11:29  And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD’S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!

  9. Num 27:18  And the LORD said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him
  10. Jdg 6:34  But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered after him.
  11. Jdg 9:23  Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech
  12. Jdg 11:29  Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah,
  13. Jdg 13:25  And the Spirit of the LORD began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.  Jdg 14:6  And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
We have considered 13 verses from Genesis to Judges.
From the 13 verses ALONE, we will FIRST try and understand the purpose of God’s spirit and what it could be?
Question:
Why is there no reference in the Torah that the Spirit is God?
Suggested Answer:
Because the spirit is not a bi-unity God with God. This is a Greeco-Roman Christian thinking that was developed later.
Question:
How should we worship God?
Suggested Answer:
Deu 11:13  And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,
Wrong Answer:
Deu 11:13  And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the Spirit your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,
Question:
What is the spirit of God?
Suggested Answer:
It is impossible for me to define the spirit of God but we can infer few things from the above verses:
  1. From the above verses God controls his spirit
  2. From Genesis 1 it appears that God’s spirit was involved in the creation process.
  3. God’s spirit gives man extra powers – Example Samson tore a lion
  4. God’s spirit gives man extra powers to prophecy – Example Seventy elders in Moses’ incident
  5. Spirit OF God: “OF” like “hand” OF God, i.e the Spirit of God belongs to God
  6. God’s spirit gave the men in the above verses ‘extra ordinary” “powers”.
  7. So the purpose of God’s spirit is to intervene in people’s lives to produce extra ordinary events. To encounter the spirit of God is to encounter God.
  8. Now the spirit ‘comes upon’ people – so it could be like an external force or power or mysterious being.
  9. The spirit has no physical appearance but the effects can be felt.
  10. The spirit can divide itself and have different effects on different people.
One more verse from Genesis – this verse is from the mouth of an Egyptian but I think he had the right understanding of the spirit of God
Gen 41:38  And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is? Gen 41:39
And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art:
Here again we find God intervened in human life by his spirit to interpret a dream that would change the course of history and make Egypt very prosperous.
Simple Conclusions from the above verses:
  • God intervened in the lives of faithful humans to bring about his purpose by his spirit.
  • He never told these people that there were TWO GODS OR TWO in ONE or ONE in TWO…
We need to lay the FOUNDATION from early scriptures and then build upon it.
If the foundation is wrong the building will also be wrong. The scriptures progressively reveal more about God’s Spirit.
It seems to best describe the spirit of God at this stage as the

” rûach ” O F  G O D {Breath of God / Mind of God }

  • Not an angel
  • Not a God
  • Not Power
  • Not energy
  • We will build on this as we explore more verses in subsequent posts.
