Psa 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
This is a prophecy (future event) regarding the Messiah. For instance in the next verse we find God (YHWH) telling Jesus:
Psa 2:8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession
This is a verse that clearly shows the hierarchy that the Father is the one who authorizes what Jesus can have. The Father loved the son so much that he gave him all authority and gave him his own throne as an inheritance. Verse 8 shows the son’s rulership after his ascension.
In the context of the second Psalm, for a Jew to read it (Before Jesus was born), who had no knowledge of an ‘existing’ Messiah in heaven or on earth this would all be future.
“Begotten” comes under a bit of debate as it possess difficulty for many. Let us look at how the ‘Hebrew’ word has been translated and used elsewhere to get a better understanding of the word:
Following Strong’s concordance
Gen 4:1 And AdamH121 knewH3045 (H853) EveH2332 his wife;H802 and she conceived,H2029 and bareH3205 (H853) Cain,H7014 and said,H559 I have gottenH7069 a manH376 fromH854 the LORD.H3068
Gen 4:18 And unto EnochH2585 was bornH3205 (H853) Irad:H5897 and IradH5897 begatH3205 (H853) Mehujael:H4232 and MehujaelH4232 begatH3205 (H853) Methusael:H4967 and MethusaelH4967 begatH3205 (H853) Lamech.H3929
Gen 4:26 And to Seth,H8352 to himH1931 alsoH1571 there was bornH3205 a son;H1121 and he calledH7121 (H853) his nameH8034 Enos:H583 thenH227 beganH2490 men to callH7121 upon the nameH8034 of the LORD.H3068
Deu 23:8 The childrenH1121 thatH834 are begottenH3205 of them shall enterH935 into the congregationH6951 of the LORDH3068 in their thirdH7992 generation.H1755
The word occurs 400+ times and as can be seen in the above few contexts it is referring to human birthing process. Children for God are both physical and spiritual. His first son Adam was a physical son but also had to become the spiritual one. Now as Adam was Not born of sexual union it is therefore clear that God does not begat through sexual unions, but he DOES BEGAT.
It is very critical to know that the Father has ’emotional’ attachments with humans as taught by the prophets and Jesus. For instance he calls Israel as his wife and child.
Begotten of God – Spiritual context
|Then you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus says the LORD, Israel is my firstborn son, and I say to you, “Let my son go that he may serve me.” If you refuse to let him go, behold, I will kill your firstborn son.”(Exodus 4:22-23 ESV)||In this context God calls Israel his ‘firstborn’ i.e. an expression that Israel was very dear to him. Also it signifies that Israel was the ‘heir’ specially chosen of God. Now as Adam, Eve and Israel were not begotten of a sexual union so also the Messiah would not be begotten of a sexual union.
God ‘promised’ to Abraham:
And in thy SEED shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.(Genesis 22:18 KJV)
So as far as the physical begetting is concerned Jesus would come out of the line Abraham.
Jesus’ preaching priority and also the apostles were always Jews First, Others second:
Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; (Romans 9:4 KJV)
We can see and feel the LOVE aspect that exists here:
Hos 11:1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.
Jesus emphasized this important aspect of worship that God is ‘OUR Father’
|Deu 14:1 Ye are the children of the LORD[YHWH] your God:||It is therefore no surprise that Jesus always spoke of YHWH as the ‘Father’. YHWH wants to have a Father-child relationship with us but one of spiritual significance.
“And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.” (Matthew 3:9-10 KJV)
|Jer 31:9 for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.||The key here is again love and bond YHWH has with HIS People!|
|Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.(2 Corinthians 6:17-18 KJV)
“for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” (2 Corinthians 6:16 KJV)
|Like Israel we are also begotten of God through a life of separateness and holiness in the Messiah. The promise is based on our willingness to be like what YHWH wants us to be!|
So, if son-ship of Israel was based on promises to Abraham and obedience, so also it will be of the Messiah.
Are you begotten of God?
1Pe 1:23 having been begotten again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the word of God, which liveth and abideth.
1Jn 2:29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one also that doeth righteousness is begotten of him.
1Jn 3:9 Whosoever is begotten of God doeth no sin, because his seed abideth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is begotten of God.
1Jn 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is begotten of God, and knoweth God.
1Jn 5:1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is begotten of God: and whosoever loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
1Jn 5:4 For whatsoever is begotten of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that hath overcome the world, even our faith.
1Jn 5:18 We know that whosoever is begotten of God sinneth not; but he that was begotten of God keepeth him, and the evil one toucheth him not.
To be begotten of God is spiritual:
“But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” (John 1:12-13)
Jesus as SON of God ‘You are my Son‘
|The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;(Mark 1:1 KJV)||Here Mark starts with a summary of who Jesus is and then goes on to tell Jesus’ story.|
|And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy–the Son of God.(Luke 1:35 ESV)||Here the Angel gives the prophecy about Jesus that this child shall be called “SON OF GOD”. As a baby Jesus was crying like any other human because he was human. His DNA was not messed up because he was created by the Holy Spirit. He was created as PURE MAN – Not Half God – half man or full man – full God.
Jesus was a toddler and was fragile and needed caring.
As in other mythologies, Jesus was not a “BABY GOD”!
Jesus started ‘babbling’ like other babies before he could speak the language.
And as Luke summarizes:
And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him. (Luke 2:40 ESV)
I.e. He grew as a human not like a God! The favour of his God was upon him.
There was nothing unusual about Jesus in terms of a “Full God Full Man”, rather he was flukily human. Compare Jesus’ early life with that of Samson and Samuel:
And the woman bore a son and called his name Samson. And the young man grew, and the LORD blessed him. (Judges 13:24 ESV)
Now the young man Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the LORD and also with man. (1 Samuel 2:26 ESV)
Or as the prophecy foretold:
For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. (Isaiah 53:2 KJV)
So there was nothing spectacular about his growing up! Just the ordinary and mundane but filled with righteousness and holiness.
Spiritually speaking true sonship comes about as seen in Israel’s case through separateness and holiness.
Jesus was set apart from birth by God as God was his CREATOR/FATHER and Mary his Mother!
Nazarite unto God from the womb:
Being set apart is again not an unusual act:
For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines. (Judges 13:5 KJV)
Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. (Jeremiah 1:5 KJV)
But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. (Luke 1:13-15 ESV)
Now clearly Jesus was above these men and his calling like Jeremiah was even before his physical existence and so was his consecration as SON even before his birth but became a reality at his physical birth even when in the womb of Mary.
So there is a sonship that he possessed which was very unique to him (begotten) but that did not give him any advantage over sin or super powers:
Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; (Hebrews 5:7 KJV)
So, Jesus’ son-ship started at birth (fore-ordained) and demonstrated when he taught, performed miracles and acted in love and holiness. The son-ship was sealed eternally or completed at the resurrection when death was defeated and the earth opened up to give up Jesus to be received to heaven.
|Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;(Hebrews 5:8 KJV)||So, Jesus’ son-ship started at his birth in a physical sense. He is now in heaven being seated at the right hand of God as Heir still demonstrates his son-ship. During the days of his flesh, He demonstrated his sonship through his holy living and teachings. Being a son he was also taught obedience and was given a hard life that led to spiritual perfection. It is impossible for a Trinitarian to comprehend “yet learned he obedience”, so the Catholics have the concept of worshipping “Infant Jesus” – Fully God and Fully divine at all stages of his life!
The Trinity creed:
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;
“begotten, not made”is a contradiction to Psalms 2:7
|And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. (Matthew 14:31-33 KJV)||Here we see Peter by the turn of events and according to his realisation exclaims ‘Of a truth thou art the Son of God‘ :|
|And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?(Luke 2:49 KJV)||Jesus was conscious from an early age who his father was but that does not make him a trinity God, rather that makes him Son of God.|
|But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.“(Matthew 26:63-64 ESV)||During the trial, he was questioned about his son-ship.The elders at that time somehow understood that the ‘Messiah’ would also be the ‘Son of God’. Jesus answered them indirectly about the coming glory of the Messiah who would be seated at the right hand of God and be glorified.
So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.‘” (Matthew 27:41-43 ESV)
|And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.“(John 1:32-34 ESV)||John also bore witness that he was shown by God of the sign of Jesus’ son-ship! i.e.“He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain”
So Jesus’ son-ship is consecrated by God, testified by prophets and received by men. The key however was that did brought immense joy and pride to YHWH with Jesus who did not fail him like Adam.
|but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.(John 20:31 ESV)||The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;(Mark 1:1 KJV)
The End goal of the Gospels was to teach indeed Jesus is THE Christ, the Son of God.
|“And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: ‘The words of the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze.(Revelation 2:18 ESV)||Jesus continues to be the son of God.
|And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.“(Matthew 3:16-17 ESV)||The Father himself bore witness emphasising the spiritual and emotional aspects of the SON-SHIP:
2. “I am well pleased”
Starting from the second Psalm and here God has borne witness of Jesus is his son.
|And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.(Luke 9:35 KJV)||“beloved Son” “Hear him”
God has borne witness twice with a VOICE that Jesus is the Son.
It is also worth noting that Moses also enjoyed a similar compliment from God:
“I beseech thee for my child, whom I have begotten in my bonds, Onesimus,” (Philemon 1:10)
Paul uses the same Greek word as used of Christ. This human spiritual example shows how one can begot another without the need for sexual intercourse.
Which Day is TODAY?
Psa 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD (YHWH) hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
“Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, which he promised afore through his prophets in the holy scriptures, concerning his Son, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, who was declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead; even Jesus Christ our Lord,” (Romans 1:1-4 ASV)
The Father and son relationship continues to exist because Jesus was raised from the dead. The prophecy was that Jesus would be begotten from the dead.
The prophecy as understood by Paul, that Jesus is declared the son by being begotten from the dead. Today then is the day of resurrection. The proof that he is the son of God was through the miracle of resurrection. No man before Jesus had attained immortality hence Jesus is the firstborn from the dead. Now, Jesus was also the only begotten son of God. Jesus was born mortal but declared the immortal son of God through the resurrection.
If Jesus was not raised from the dead he would have ceased to exist and the relationship in the real world would have ended. In fact, for three days he ceased to exist, but as per prophecy and the will of God his body did not see decay and he was raised to be the son of God for eternity. If not for resurrection Jesus would be dead for ever.
And when they had carried out all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead, and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people. And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm, “‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you.‘ And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way, “‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’ Therefore he says also in another psalm, “‘You will not let your Holy One see corruption.’ For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers and saw corruption, but he whom God raised up did not see corruption. Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through THIS MAN forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.(Acts 13:29-39 ESV)
Notice Paul’s argument: David has not taken off to heaven (body or soul), but still lies in a decayed state in his grave: ‘For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers and saw corruption, but he whom God raised up did not see corruption’. Again he connects the fulfilment of the begetting to the resurrection.
today I have begotten you.‘ And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way,
Jesus was the the only begotten of God through Mary and therefore declared holy son of God but was mortal and a descendent of David, but eternally begotten of God from the dead on the day of his resurrection.
- Jesus was a son in the purpose/dream/intention/prophecy/Word – Second Psalm/John 1. God sent servants / prophets before to preach to the Jews but in the end he sent his own son.
- It became a reality when he was FIRST created in the WOMB of Mary as a ‘Son of Adam’ – HUMAN BEING
- His life was pleasing to God as was declared: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
- At the resurrection he has attained eternal son-ship. i.e. Obtaining Eternal Life and Salvation for Mankind [‘Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this MAN forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you’]
- Resurrection is the KEY to Salvation: [Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (1 Peter 1:3 ESV)]
- Jesus is also the firstborn or first begotten of God through resurrection: [And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. (Colossians 1:18 KJV)]
- Jesus is the ‘first begotten’ of the dead and therefore becomes the author of Resurrection and life: And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, (Revelation 1:5 KJV)
- In the story of Joseph, Joseph was the chosen one even though he was not the eldest. Joseph had spiritual eminence over others. Likewise though Adam is the firstborn of God in the physical sense but Jesus takes pre-eminence on account of his spiritual life. Israel is called firstborn to Pharaoh, but Jesus is even more – Love and preference is shown to Jesus above all who is now seated at the right hand of God proving his son-ship as Heir!
- Jesus was a unique creation who like Adam had God directly as his Father, yet had the same genetics as normal human beings. Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
- Finally, the purpose of the only begotten son: ‘In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.’ 1Jn 4:9
