6 of 100 [Paul’s speech at Antioch to the Jews – No hint of any form of trinity – ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you / I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David / Through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you / YHWH raised him from the dead]

So Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said: “Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen. The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it. And for about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness. And after destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance. All this took about 450 years. And after that he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’ Of this man’s offspring God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised. Before his coming, John had proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John was finishing his course, he said, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but behold, after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’ “Brothers, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to us has been sent the message of this salvation. For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him. And though they found in him no guilt worthy of death, they asked Pilate to have him executed. And when they had carried out all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead, and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people. And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm, “‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you.’ And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way, “‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’ Therefore he says also in another psalm, “‘You will not let your Holy One see corruption.’ For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers and saw corruption, but he whom God raised up did not see corruption. Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses. (Acts 13:16-39 ESV)

In this Blog we will consider Paul’s speech at Antioch to the Jews at a synagogue.

Paul starts the narration from “The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt” and ends his narration with the truth of the Messiah.

He has not lost focus of who God is. Reference: “God of this people Israel”. The first commandment is to LOVE this GOD which seems impossible for you because you think he is hard and cruel!

THe Important points about Jesus that Paul highlighted:

  1. Of this man’s offspring (David) God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised
  2. The danger of lack of understanding: “because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him”. Also when Christ comes a second time will you recognize him or think he is the AntiChrist?
  3. And as John was finishing his course, he said, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but behold, after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’

I.e. John witnessed he was NOT the Christ. He did not witness He was Not the TRINITY that people would invent later on. It is amazing how Christians think they know better than John who witnessed that Jesus was the Christ!

  1. Paul recognizes Jesus as Messiah (Not a Trinity God) from the following passages of prophecies:

‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’

Just consider the logic of Trinity: One God of trinity promises David something that the Other God of Trinity would receive!

“God raised him from the dead”

Therefore he says also in another psalm, “‘You will not let your Holy One see corruption.’ (Acts 13:35 ESV)

This is the consistent message in Acts. If God did not intervene Jesus would be still be in his Grave. This is an IMPORTANT emphasis!

See How many times apostles make this point: (Christians have missed the doctrine and importance of resurrection by a million miles. When you defend a false doctrine you will be compromised in your understanding)

Here is the blessing that was promised:

You have said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant: ‘I will establish your offspring forever, and build your throne for all generations.'” Selah (Psalms 89:3-4 ESV)

These are important prophecies to understand the mystery of the Messiah in the person Jesus. The mystery was unlocked in the person Jesus and there remains no longer any mystery.

Note the words

  • ‘ever’ signifying eternal life
  • ‘offspring’ Of David’s line – human
  • ‘Throne’ – yet to be fulfilled. For Jesus was given no crown of Glory but only of thorns, so it still remains to be fulfilled his kingship.

I know this is an impossible task for enlightened Trinitarian Christians and the tone of this blog is most discouraging, but to be freed from false doctrines it requires deep thinking of the prophecies of the Messiah. Who he ‘would’ be was established in the OT scriptures. If you can establish who he is from the Old covenant you would not end up with three Gods!

David v/s Jesus

David the Anointed Jesus the Anointed
And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.'(Acts 13:22 ESV) Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.'”(Hebrews 10:7 ESV)
Of this man’s offspring God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised.(Acts 13:23 ESV)
For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers and saw corruption,(Acts 13:36 ESV) but he whom God raised up did not see corruption.(Acts 13:37 ESV)

Therefore he says also in another psalm, “‘You will not let your Holy One see corruption.’

(Acts 13:35 ESV)

And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way, “‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’

(Acts 13:34 ESV)

But God raised him from the dead,

(Acts 13:30 ESV)

What is the emphasis?

Trinity! Absolutely NOT!

‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you.

this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm, “‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you.’ (Acts 13:33 ESV)

Ha!

Today?

Which day?

Paul’s witness and emphasis was that Jesus is the Son of God!

The phrase ‘Son of God’ appears nearly 40+ times in the NT writings.

What does the phrase ‘I have begotten you’ mean?

See here for details:

We need to be able to explain and harmonize all references rather than conclude with some illogical Trinity.

Trinity logic:

  • Jesus stated “I and the Father are One” You say: Ah look He is God. Forgetting the same Jesus also stated: “Joh 10:29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all,” and You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. (John 14:28 ESV)
  • But Moses taught God is One

Oh

So,

God + Son = 1 GOD

Follow Paul’s speech at Antioch to the Jews and try to follow his EMPHASIS and what he is trying to get the Jews to believe in Jesus! I know you are eager to quote many verses but that is the problem. We need to accept all verses but if something is hard to understand we should not make a Dogmatic conclusion of a trinity

In Summary:

  • Paul is trying to persuade the ‘God fearing’ Jews to accept Jesus is indeed the promised ONE.
  • His KEY argument that Jesus is the Messiah (even though he did not fulfill the prophecy of siting on David’s throne) was his resurrection from the dead. [If anyone who dies takes off to heaven then the resurrection is meaningless.]
  • David himself did not go to heaven neither have your relatives. Jesus will be a ruler but he is in a ‘waiting’ period “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.’ (Acts 2:34,35 ESV)
  • and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses. (Acts 13:39 ESV) [Discussing this is not in the scope of this blog]
  • Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, (Acts 13:38 ESV)
  • There is call to believe in Jesus but not as a Trinity! As a descendent of David, as the Son of God, as the Messiah, as the Saviour!

Doctrine of Emphasis:

Therefore he says also in another psalm, “‘You will not let your Holy One see corruption.’ (Acts 13:35 ESV)

But God raised him from the dead, and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people.(Acts 13:30-31 ESV)

Why the trinity has no emphasis on the important doctrine of salvation through resurrection is because that would be make a God of the Trinity dead. Again if the God of the Trinity truly did not die then you are still in your sins? Again a God of the trinity has a body and a soul? And his Soul continues to live in heaven? God has a Soul that came down to earth in a bodily form?
